What is theAlita: Battle Angel 2release date? The first Alita movie took 16 years to make it to the big screen, so it’s no surprise we’re facing a long wait to see a sequel.
Alita: Battle Angelwas regarded as one of thebest action moviesof 2019, and fans have been desperate for more ever since. James Cameron—the producer behind the film—has even confirmed two Alita sequels should be on the way, so what’s the hold up? Here’s all we know about the new movie and why it’s taking so long.
Alita: Battle Angel 2 release datespeculation
We expect Alita: Battle Angel 2 to arrive in the summer of 2025, but that’s at the very earliest, sadly.
Star, Rosa Salazar, certainly wants it to happen. “I will fight to make Alita 2 happen until the end of time,” Salazar told The Digital Fix in an interview. “Thanks to performance capture technology, I could do this movie whenever. I could perform this sequel in five years, but I don’t think it should take that long. I think it’s a story that should continue.”
Producer Jon Landau has saidthe movie is in active development. While pre-production hasn’t started, he claims it’s still on the minds of himself, director Robert Rodriguez, and star Rosa Salazar. Rodriguez also told The Wrap,“[James] and I always talk about how we’d love to do another Alita.” Considering the first was one of his best movies, we’re on board.
Cameron might have his hands full with all his Avatar movies, but the acclaimed director usually gets what he wants: So if he wants more Alita movies, it’s very likely they’ll see the light of day. While thatall sounds good, production hasn’t started and the 2023 strikes slowed things down. As a result, it’ll be a few years before a complete, VFX-heavy Alita sequel is on our screens.
Who will be in the Alita: Battle Angel 2 cast?
The only certainty for the Alita: Battle Angel 2 cast is Rosa Salazar, the actor who plays Alita. She has spoken about her love of the role and would be essential to asequel.
We imagine Edward Norton, who was revealed to be the nefarious Nova at the end of the first movie, would also be back for a sequel to fulfill his evil plans.
Of the remaining supporting cast, Mahershala Ali is the least likely to return, as his character Vector died in the first movie. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connolly, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley would probably return, too, and if our assumptions about Hugo are correct, Keenan Johnson could be back in some way, shape, or form, too.
The expected Alita: Battle Angel 2 cast list:
- Rosa Salazar as Alita
- Christoph Waltz as Dr. Dyson Ido
- Edward Norton as Nova
- Jennifer Connolly as Chiren
- Ed Skrein as Zapan
- Jackie Earle Harley as Grewishka
- Keenan Johnson as Hugo
What’s Alita: Battle Angel 2about?
We’re expecting the sequel to focus onAlita’s travel to Zalemto take on the evil Nova.
Watching down on Iron City from his throne, Nova is the big bad guy of the Alita universe, and although he has his puppets to do his bidding, he’s the movie villain Alita is desperate to get her hands on.
In the climax of the first movie, Alita saw the young man she had fallen in love with, Hugo, shredded to pieces by a serrated defense ring. Hugo, in his attempt to reach the promised land of Zalem, was cut down by Nova. This is, of course, after Alita had been forced to take Hugo’s head and turn him into a cyborg, too.
Relationships sure can be messy, can’t they? Whether Alita will simply avenge Hugo’s death, or go in search of his broken body, remains to be seen. After all, she has fixed him once, so the odds are she would want to do so again. With the skills of her adoptive parents, Ido and Dr. Chiren, it would certainly be possible to revive Hugo as a robotic hybrid once more.
