Militants in Gaza cheer as motionless hostage is paraded around, video shows

From CNN's Paul P. Murphy, Allegra Goodwin and Benjamin Brown

An unconscious woman taken hostage by Gaza militants attacking an Israeli music festival was seen being paraded around the coastal enclave in new video authenticated and geolocated by CNN.

CNN has confirmed the identity of the woman as Shani Louk, a German-Israeli dual national. CNN has reached out to her family for comment but has not yet received a response.

Her cousinconfirmed to The Washington Postthat Louk attended the Nova Festival, an all night dance party celebrating the Israeli harvest festival Sukkot near Re’im, Israel.

Louk is seen motionless in the video.

One gunman, carrying a rocket propelled grenade, has his leg draped over her waist; the other holds a clump of her dreadlocks. “Allahu Akbar,” they cheer – “God is Great,” in Arabic.

Some of the crowd gathered around the truck, just outside of the Al-Shalfoh bakery and grocery store, join in the cheers. One man spits on Louk’s head as the car drives off.

CNN does not know Louk’s whereabouts, or condition, at this time. CNN is not airing the video because it is graphic and disturbing.

“We recognized her by the tattoos, and she has long dreadlocks,” Louk’s cousin told The Washington Post.

A German foreign ministry source told CNN that, “The Federal Foreign Office and the German embassy in Tel Aviv are in close contact with the Israeli authorities in order to clarify whether and to what extent German citizens are affected.”

In video obtained by German news outlet Bild, Louk’s mother Ricarda spoke directly about the abduction.

Efraim Halevy, the former head of Mossad, Israel’s Intelligence Service, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Saturday that Hamas militants had launched thousands of rockets at Israel on Saturday.

Halevysaid that he suspects the rockets were manufactured in the Gaza strip after being “smuggled in by sea” and that Hamas “probably” was able to perform “trial training” without letting Israeli forces discover their plans.

“We didn’t have an inkling of what was going on,” he said.

"Too early" to say if Iran was directly involved in Israel attack - senior US official

From CNN's MJ Lee

The US cannot say whether Iran played a direct role in the attack on Israel, a senior administration official said Saturday, though the administration is planning to look into the matter.

It is “too early to say whether the state of Iran was directly involved,” the official said. “We’re going to be looking at them very closely.”

The official added that there is absolutely no question that Hamas is funded, equipped and armed by Iran, and emphasized that the US will continue to take actions to hold Iran accountable.

“Hamas is a terrorist group. Full stop,” the official said.

As for the billions of dollars that were unfrozen in exchange for American detainees earlier this year – which some of President Biden’s critics have incorrectly said was linked to the attack on Israel – the official reiterated that those funds will not be accessed by Iran, none of it has been spent so far, and in the future, can only be spent for humanitarian purposes.

US could announce new assistance to Israel as soon as Sunday, but a dysfunctional Congress creates questions

From CNN's Kevin Liptak
October 7, 2023: Israel says it is ‘at war’ after Hamas surprise attack | CNN (9)

Evening light illuminates the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, on September 30.

The US could announce new assistance to Israel as soon as Sunday, a US official said, as the Biden administration works to bolster its Middle East ally in the wake of Saturday’s unprecedented attack by Hamas.

At the same time, the current dysfunction in Congress remains an open question for American officials as they work to provide Israel what it needs. Without a sitting House Speaker, administration officials are unclear about what can be accomplished.

Top American and Israeli officials have been working throughout the day to identify where Washington can be of assistance as Israel prepares to respond to the attack, including at the Pentagon, State Department and the White House.

“We are in deep discussions with the Israelis about some of their particular needs as they respond to this,” a senior US administration official said Saturday.

The official said “we might have more to say about it as early as tomorrow.”

When Biden spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier Saturday, the President reinforced the US would provide Israel what it needed to defend itself, though not at a level of specificity to include particular weapons or hardware.

The official said the Israelis would likely be “looking closely” at what intelligence if any existed ahead of the attack.

But they said there was no “specific warning or indicator from another country” that would have predicted such an assault.

“In terms of the level of sophistication of what transpired overnight here, and what continues to transpire, that’s a very different, a different issue, and I’ve not seen anything, support that,” the official said.

The US “always share(s) timely intelligence about threats in the region, with Israel and other partners,” the official said.

The official insisted it was “really premature to speculate” whether Saturday’s attack would scuttle attempts by the Biden administration to broker a normalization agreement between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Still, the official said “terrorist groups like Hamas will not derail any such outcome.”

Number of captured Israelis is"significant", IDF says, as Hamas warns hostages now spread across Gaza

From CNN's Shirin Zia Faqiri, Kareem Khadder and Mohammed Tawfeeq

The number of Israeli nationals captured by Hamas is “unprecedented”, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have told CNN as the militant group said that the hostages its fighters had taken were being held across Gaza.

“These are extremely disturbing scenes for any Israeli to see. I don’t even want to imagine what the fate of this Israeli person will be at the hands of these blood-thirsty animals.”

“I can assure you that the IDF will be focused on getting each and every Israeli back”, Conricus said, adding that the number of civilians and soldiers captured by Hamas is an “unfortunately, a significant number.”

“These are numbers that we have never, ever seen before and these are, they’re unprecedented, and they will force an unprecedented response from Israel,” said Conricus.

In a statement Saturday, Hamas said the captured Israeli hostages are being held across the Gaza strip and warned against attacks in the area.

“What happens to the people of the Gaza Strip will happen to them and beware of miscalculation,” Obaida added.

Some context: The Izzedine al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed earlier on Saturday to have captured “dozens” of Israelis during Saturday’s surprise attack.

After the attack, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “destroy” Hamas.

“We will forcefully avenge this dark day that they have forced on the State of Israel and its citizens,” Netanyahu said in a televised speech late on Saturday. “I say to the residents of Gaza: Leave now because we will operate forcefully everywhere.”

Videos show how Gaza militants overtook an Israeli border base at daybreak

From CNN's Paul P. Murphy
October 7, 2023: Israel says it is ‘at war’ after Hamas surprise attack | CNN (10)

A still from a video released by Hamas shows militants advancing on an Israeli military base just outside of Nahal Oz, Israel, on October 7.

It took dozens of Gaza militants — armed with guns, grenades and bomb-dropping drones — to take control of an Israeli military base just outside of Nahal Oz, Israel, a CNN analysis of videos released by Hamas has found.

At least two Israeli soldiers were killed by the militants, and at least six female soldiers at the base were seen being taken prisoner in the videos.

The videos have all been geolocated and authenticated by CNN.

Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls the densely populated Gaza Strip, heavily edited the videos to obscure the identity of their militants and to flaunt the success of their attack.

The clips offer the first glimpse into how Hamas organized and executed its attack on Israel early Saturday morning.

How the ambush unfolded: It begins with armed men sneaking between two earthen berms near a gate along the Israel-Gaza border fence. They are then seen approaching and moving past a watchtower — the military base’s large communication tower is seen in the distance.

Once past, the militants — dozens of them, dressed in dark clothes — are seen moving across the open space toward the base.

A second video, taken around the same time by a weaponized drone, appears to show the start of the ambush.Three Israeli troops standing near a van on the southern portion of the base are seen before the drone drops at least two bombs on them. One Israeliappears to be badly wounded as the troops take cover next to a nearby military vehicle.

The videos indicate that, although the militants were traveling from the north, they circled around the base and began the assault from the south.

One of the videos shows militants throwing a grenade on top of a moving Israeli military vehicle just outside the base.

It’s unclear from the videos how many troops were stationed at the base, or if there were extensive firefights there.

An additional video shows a number of individuals — some appear to be looting the base — on top of and around a few tanks on the property. At some point during the storming, something on the base caught fire, and a thick plume of black smoke appears.

The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed earlier on Saturday that fighting was taking place in Nahal Oz.

Israel extends "special security situation" across entire territory

From CNN's Lauren Izso and Jonny Hallam
October 7, 2023: Israel says it is ‘at war’ after Hamas surprise attack | CNN (11)

Israel's Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant is pictured during a visit with his Greek counterpart in Athens on May 4, 2023.

Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant expanded the country’s “special security situation” to the entirety of Israel’s territory late Saturday, according to his communications office.

This enables the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to provide security instructions to civilians and to close public sites as needed for security, the minister’s office said.

A “special security situation” area, withinan 80-kilometer (48-mile) radius of the Gaza Strip, had been established earlier on Saturday.

“Hamas will understand very quickly that it has made a mistake - a grave mistake and will pay a (heavy) price,” he said.

Latest attacks: The defense minister’s statement comes after Gaza militants fired a fresh round of rockets on Saturday evening, making direct hits on multiple locations inside Israel, including in Tel Aviv, according to Israeli authorities.

In a Telegram post, the armed wing of Hamas — the militant group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, and Israel — said it had fired an additional 150 rockets in response to the bombing of a residential tower in Gaza City.

A vow of change: In his statement, Gallant claimed he had been close to destroying Hamas 15 years ago, when he headed the military’s Southern Command, but that he was stopped by “the political echelon.”

“This phenomenon will not continue. We will change reality on the ground in Gaza for the next 50 years,” he continued. “What was before will be no more. We will operate at full force.”

“I ask Israel’s citizens to remain determined and to support our security forces,” he added.

Analysis: Why didn’t Israel’s sophisticated border security stop Saturday’s attack?

Analysis by CNN'sJoshua Berlinger

The gunmen came from air, sea and land. They shot at civilians, took hostages and forced families to barricade themselves indoors, fearing for their lives.

A day that began with air raid sirens blaring out in the early morning had by lunchtime turned intoone of the most terrifying attacks Israel has knownin the 75 years of its existence. Assailants from Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls the impoverished and densely populated Gaza Strip, had by nightfall killed hundreds of people and wounded hundreds more.

An attack with no warning: Though Israel is no stranger to terrorist attacks, Saturday’s assault was unprecedented – not least because of the lack of warning. Israel’s military on Saturday found itself caught off-guard, despite decades in which the country became a technology powerhouse that boasts one of the world’s most impressive armed forces and a premier intelligence agency.

The questions for Israeli authorities are legion. It has been more than 17 years since an Israeli soldier was taken as a prisoner of war in an assault on Israeli territory. And Israel has not seen this kind of infiltration of military bases, towns and kibbutzim since town-by-town fighting in the 1948 war of independence. How could a terror group from one of the world’s poorest enclaves manage to launch such a devastating attack?

A system failure: “The entire system failed. It’s not just one component. It’s the entire defense architecture that evidently failed to provide the necessary defense for Israeli civilians,” said Jonathan Conricus, a former international spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces.

Heavy investment in defense: Since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it has spent billions of dollars securing the border from attacks. That has included striking at any weapons fired from Gaza into Israel, and stopping terrorists from trying to cross the border by air or underground using tunnels. To stop rocket attacks, Israel has used the Iron Dome, an effective rocket defense system developedwith help from the United States.

Israelalso spent hundreds of millions of dollarsbuilding a smart border system with sensors and subterranean walls that was, according to Reuters, completed at the end of 2021.

Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepts rockets launched from Gaza, as seen from Ashkelon in southern Israel, on October 7.

So far, officials have said little: Israeli authorities will almost certainly look at where its systems failed on Saturday, but the country has not yet released figures on how many of the more than 2,000 rockets fired by Hamas militants were intercepted. Nor have officials commented on if the border fence did its job. And the Israeli military has repeatedly dodged questions about whether Saturday’s events constitute an intelligence failure.

Military spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht told CNN that Israel was focused on the current fight and protecting civilian lives.

“We’ll talk about what happened intelligence-wise after,” Hecht said.

Why the al-Aqsa mosque continues to be a flashpoint of tensions

October 7, 2023: Israel says it is ‘at war’ after Hamas surprise attack | CNN (14)

Palestinians offer Eid al-Fitr prayers by the Dome of the Rock in the al-Aqsa compound on April 21, 2023.

The al-Aqsa compound is one of the most revered places in Islam and Judaism. The sacred grounds, known to Muslims as Al Haram Al Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) and to Jews as Temple Mount have been a flashpoint of tensions between Israel and the Palestinians for decades.

In a statement, Hamas said it had launched Saturday’s “Al-Aqsa Storm” attack on Israel — which targeted hundreds of troops and civilians —in partto defend the holy site.

Only Muslims are allowed to pray in the compound under a status quo arrangement originally reached more than a century ago. Non-Muslim visitors are allowed visits at certain times and only to certain areas of the complex.

But many in the Muslims world fear that the right to be the sole worshipers there has been eroded and that the sites themselves are being threatened by a growing far-right Jewish movement and Israel’s far-right government.

Clashes have frequently broken out at the site between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli forces. Police raided the compound several times over the last year.

The complex lies in East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as the capital of their future state and which most of the international community considers to be occupied territory. Israel captured it from Jordan in its six-day war in 1967 and considers both East and West Jerusalem as its united, “eternal capital.”

Palestinian Hamas militants are seen during a military show in the Bani Suheila district on July 20, 2017, in Gaza City, Gaza.

Hamas is anIslamist organizationwith a military wing that came into being in 1987, emerging out of the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamist group that was founded in the late 1920s in Egypt.

The word “Hamas” is itself an acronym for “Harakat Al-Muqawama Al-Islamia” – Arabic for Islamic Resistance Movement.

The group, like most Palestinian factions and political parties, insists that Israel is an occupying power and that it is trying to liberate the Palestinian territories. It considers Israel an illegitimate state.

Its refusal to recognize Israel is one reason why it has rejected peace talks in the past. In 1993, it opposed the Oslo Accords, a peace pact between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

The group presents itself as an alternative to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which has recognized Israel and has engaged in multiple failed peace initiatives with it. The PA is today led by Mahmoud Abbas and is based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Hamas, meanwhile, controls theGaza Strip, an enclave that is home to some 2 million Palestinians and is frequently the site of civilian casualties when fighting flares between militants and Israeli forces.

Hamas has over the years claimed many attacks on Israel and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel. Israel accuses its archenemy Iran of backing Hamas.

A Palestinian man passes Israeli soldiers patrolling in a street in Gaza on December 20, 1987.

Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have existed since before the nation’s founding in 1948. Thousands of people on both sides have been killed and many more injured in the long-simmering conflict between the two sides over the past few decades.

Violence has been particularly heightened this year. The number of Palestinians – militants and civilians – killed in the occupied West Bank by Israeli forces is at its highest in nearly two decades. The same is true of Israelis and foreigners – most of them civilians – killed in Palestinian attacks.

Israel and the militant group Hamas have been involved in armed conflict dating back as early as the 1987 First Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, against Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Israel captured Gaza from Egypt in a 1967 war, then withdrew in 2005. The small territory — home to some 2 million Palestinians — fell under Hamas’ control in 2007 after a brief civil war with Fatah, a rival Palestinian faction which is the backbone of the Palestinian Authority.

After Hamas seized control of Gaza, Israel and Egypt imposed a strict siege on the territory, which is ongoing. Israel also maintains an air and naval blockade on Gaza.

Before Saturday’s operation, the last war between Hamas and Israel was in 2021, which lasted for 11 days and killed at least 250 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel.

Saturday’s assault occurred on the 50th anniversary of the 1973 war, when Israel’s Arab neighbors launched a surprise attack on Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, on October 6, 1973.

Elsewhere, German airline Lufthansa has also drastically reduced flights to Tel Aviv.

“There will still be one flight from Tel Aviv to Frankfurt this Saturday. All other Lufthansa flights to and from Tel Aviv have been cancelled for today’s Saturday,” the airline said in a statement.

Air France said it would suspend flights into Tel Aviv until further notice as well, citing safety concerns.

In all, FlightAware shows 14% of flights bound for Tel Aviv from around the world have been cancelled.

Videos show Hamas seizing Israelis

The Israel Defense Forces say Hamas has taken hostages and prisoners of war since it launched its surprise attack Saturday morning.

Herface isbleeding, and her wristsappear to becable-tied behind her back. The jeepalsoappears to haveanIsraelDefenseForces licenseplate, suggesting it may have been stolen and brought into Gaza.

Another video, which appears to showHamasmilitantstaking multiple Israelis captive, was geolocated by CNN to Be’eri in southern Israel, which isa village close to Gaza.

In another set of videos geolocated and authenticated, Hamas appears to be seizing Israeli soldiers.

The first video shows Hamas militants yank two clearly terrified and stunned soldiers out of a disabled tank. It’s unclear from the video how the tank was disabled, but Hamas has been utilizing drones to drop bombs onto Israeli tanks.

The militants are then seen kicking one of the soldiers on the ground in a short snippet of video. In the next clip, the soldier is seen lying motionless on the ground.

The second soldier is led away by Hamas militants.

A third soldier — whose face was very bloody — is seen lying on the ground motionless near the tank track. CNN does not know the current whereabouts or status of the three soldiers.

Another video, taken afterward, shows a number of different armed men around the tank. The three soldiers seen in the first video are nowhere to be seen.

The armed men in the second video are seen pulling a fourth Israeli soldier from the tank.

The soldier is motionless as he’s dragged down the side of the tank and onto the ground. The armed men then begin to stomp on the man’s body.

The video is heavily edited — Hamas has blurred the faces of their militants — and it was posted to Hamas’ official social media accounts. CNN has geolocated the video and can report that it was taken along the eastern Gaza border near the border wall.

“I condemn the indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. I am in contact with Israeli officials, and fully support Israel’s right to defend itself from such terrorist acts,”wrotethe top American diplomat in Israel, Stephanie Hallett, on social media.

US President Joe Biden, who last spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netayanhu during a meeting in September, has long defended Israel’s right to defend itself and was expected to closely monitor the conflict throughout the day.

Still, the outburst of violence comes at an extremely sensitive moment in US-Israel relations. It would appear on its surface to complicate a growing effort by the Biden administration to broker a normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Top Biden officials had been working for months to mediate such an agreement, which would transform the region but is also expected to include some type of concessions to the Palestinians, who have been watching the talks with concern.

The barrage of rockets from Gaza and Netanyahu’s declaration that “we are at war” now threaten that deal.

The broad contours of the deal had been mostly hammered out, but there remained sticking points and US officials had suggested there remained a long way to go before it was finalized.

Saudi Arabia has traditionally been one of the main regional defenders of the Palestinian cause.

Biden’s current relationship with Netanyahu is also in a different place than it was during the last major outbreak of violence between Gaza and Israel, in 2021.

Back then, Biden and his aides sought to contain the conflict from breaking out into larger war, including in regular phone calls between the two leaders.

It also included intensive, hour-by-hour behind-the-scenes diplomacy to convince regional players, including the leaders of Egypt and Qatar, to play a role in brokering an eventual ceasefire.

Since then, there have been strains in the two men’s relationship, driven mostly by decisions taken by Netanyahu and his far-right governing coalition.

Biden’s meeting with Netanyahu in September on the sidelines of the UN meetings was their first face-to-face since Netanyahu retook power earlier this year. He is expected to visit the White House in the coming months.

How the world is reacting to the fighting in Israel

World leaders are reacting to Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel Saturday morning. Many are, as has been the case during previous conflicts, calling for calm and restraint.

Here’s what’s being said in the Middle East:

Egypt: Often the mediator between the two sides, Egypt is already trying to find a way to stop the bloodshed. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said he is in “intensive” communication with peers and international officials to “halt the ongoing escalation,” the ministry said in a statement.

Turkey: Speaking at a political conference,Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country calls on “the parties to act with restraint in light of the events in Israel this morning and to stay away from impulsive steps that will escalatetension.”

Saudi Arabia: The Kingdom said it is closely following the “unprecedented” situation and called on “both sides to immediately stop the escalation. The Saudi Foreign Miinstry said in a statement that it is repeating its “previous repetitive warnings of the dangers of the situation blowing up as a result of the continuing occupation and depriving the Palestinian people of their legitimate rights.”

Iran: An adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed support for the Palestinian militant attack on Israelis on Saturday, Iranian state-affiliated ISNA said.

Here’s how European Union officials have reacted:

Ursula von der Leyen: The President of the European Commission said on X, previously known as Twitter, that she “unequivocally” condemns the attack.“It is terrorism in its most despicable form. Israel has the right to defend itself against such heinous attacks.”

Charles Michel: The President of the European Councila also condemned the “indiscriminate attacks launched against Israel and its people this morning inflicting terror and violence against innocent citizens. My thoughts are with all the victims. EU stands in solidarity with Israeli people in this horrific moment.”

What some European leaders are saying on X:

French President Emmanuel Macron: “I strongly condemn the terrorist attacks which are currently hitting Israel. I express my full solidarity with the victims, and their families and loved ones.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “Shocking news reaches us today from Israel. The rocket fire from Gaza and the escalating violence shock us deeply. Germany condemns these Hamas attacks and stands by Israel.”

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: “I am shocked by this morning’s attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli citizens. Israel has an absolute right to defend itself. We’re in contact with Israeli authorities, and British nationals in Israel should follow travel advice.”

Dutch Prime MinisterMark Rutte: “Appalling images from Israel. Terror organisation Hamas is waging an unprecedented attack on Israel. Innocent civilians are being attacked by terrorists. This violence must stop; Israel has every right to defend itself.”

Russia and Ukraine weigh in:

Both sides in the Ukraine war have also commented.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister andMiddleEast envoy Mikhail Bogdanov told RIA Novosti on Saturday that Russia is in contact with Israeli andand Palestinian officialsand calls on both sides for an immediate ceasefire.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Ukraine “strongly condemns the ongoing terrorist attacks against Israel, including rocket attacks against the civilian population in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.”

“We express our support for Israel in its right to defend itself and its people,” it added.

Israeli paratroopers march on October 25, 1973, along the Suez-Cairo road on the western bank of the Suez Canal during the 1973 War.

The surprise rocket and infiltration attacks from Hamas on Israel come on the 50thanniversary of the 1973 War, a surprise attack by Israel’s Arab neighbors which began on October 6, 1973.

Israel calls the war the Yom Kippur War, as the blitz began on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish Calendar. Jews typically observe the day by fasting and repenting on their sins during the previous year.In much of the Arab world, it’s known as the October 6 War and considered a victory.

The conflict began with Egypt and Syria sending in troops in the hopes they could retake territory in the Golan Heights and Sinai Peninsula previously seized by Israel in the June 1967 Six-Day War.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Sudan, Morocco and Jordan aided Egypt and Syria with troops, financial assistance and weapons. The Soviet Union airlifted supplies to the Arab combatants, while the United States provided aid to Israel.

The war ended with Israeli troops approaching Damascus and an entire Egyptian army surrounded.

To note: The Jewish calendar is lunar, so holidays are not celebrated on the same date every year. Yom Kippur this year began at sundown on September 24 and ended on September 25.
